The Great Perfection Practice Guide who upholds the banner of the old translation teachings

“I now bestow upon you the treasured lineage of the Kathok school—the skull of Kadampa Desha, the founder of Kathok. May you uphold the true transmission through the three wisdoms of study, contemplation, and meditation, and propagate the teachings of Vajrayana.”

—Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, a great master of Dzogchen and renowned yogi

He is the incarnation of Akasagarbha Namkhai Nyingpo.

From a young age, he was recognized as a reincarnated Living Buddha by thirteen Rinpoches.

His writings at the age of 12 were respectfully studied and practiced by his teachers according to their teachings.

He mastered the true meaning of language in just nine months and can fluently read historical texts in Chinese.

He possesses the lineage transmission of the five major schools of Buddhism and is a Rimé school teacher well-versed in both exoteric and esoteric teachings.

He possesses great supernatural powers, but he never uses them to gain disciples.

He unlocked countless hidden treasures from a young age, but he never boasted about it.

He is well-versed in the five sciences, both major and minor, and his knowledge is profound and extensive.

He is a historian of Buddhism, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of Buddhist history.

He is indifferent to fame and fortune. He lived a simple life, humble and unassuming, and was praised by great masters.

He was the master of many terma (hidden treasure) teachings.

He was the guru of the Tantric family and several masters.

He was hailed by many Rinpoches as an accomplished being who had mastered the five sciences in this lifetime.

His prayer for his continued existence was personally written by a bodhisattva.

He was the holder of the Dzogchen oral transmission Vajra Bridge teaching, the most accomplished being in the Dzogchen tradition.

He remained true to his original aspiration, persisting in the propagation of the old translation teachings.

He was the Black Practitioner prophesied to lead countless karmic beings to the Pure Land of Lotus Light in this lifetime.

He was none other than the Dzogchen practice guide, Rigdzin Chenpo Rinpoche, who upheld the banner of the old translation teachings.

Rigdzin Chenpo’s full name is Kathok Rigdzin Chenpo Pema Wangchen (hereinafter referred to as Master Bao). Rigdzin Chenpo means “Great Vidyadhara,” a title for a great accomplished master who has attained the four Vidyadhara stages of Vajrayana, and also signifies a sect leader and the master of the Dharma.

Master Bao was born on an auspicious day in 1973, and is of Mongolian and Tibetan descent. In his youth, he was recognized by thirteen renowned Rinpoches, including the great terton of Kangtsang, Dorje Drup Rinpoche, Karma Chame Rinpoche, Shakya Rigdzin Rinpoche, and Gopa Tulku Rinpoche, as the reincarnation of Kathok Rigdzin Tsewang Norbu, the heart son of Padmasambhava, and the great master and national teacher of thirteen countries.

Master Bao is a Rimé (non-sectarian) teacher well-versed in both exoteric and esoteric Buddhism. From a young age, he received extensive teachings from the five major schools of Tibetan Buddhism: Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, Gelug, and Jonang, possessing lineages from the Kathok, Palyul, Longchen, Dudjom, Kagyu, and Jonang schools. He relied on Kangtsang Rinpoche, Shakya Rinpoche, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, Nyelong Rinpoche, and Langga Rinpoche as his root gurus, and received teachings from many accomplished masters such as Sakya Dachen Rinpoche and Dorje Drakpa’s deputy head, Chökyi Gyaltsen Rinpoche.

Master Bao is the sixth incarnation of the Rigdzin Chenpo Kathok lineage and the ninth incarnation of the Jonang lineage, and is the head of the Rigdzin lineage. Besides the thirteen deities of Guru Rinpoche, the All-Accomplishing Tara, Red Tara, the Great Perfection Oral Transmission Vajra Bridge, and the Five Stages of Vajrasattva, which were treasured in this lineage, she is also the principal deity of several other teachings, including the Three-Faced, Six-Armed Red Hayagriva treasured by Kangtsang Rinpoche and the Blue Light Blazing Mother (Vajravarahi) treasured by Nyelong Rinpoche. Her lineage is pure and complete, encompassing extensive study of both exoteric and esoteric teachings, emphasizing both understanding and practice.

Birth and Certification

Before the birth of the Precious Guru, his previous incarnation (the fifth incarnation of Kathok Rigdzin Chenpo) entrusted clothing and offering vessels for the Dharma protectors to the Precious Guru’s mother, who was only a teenager at the time, saying, “I will come to you in my next life.”

Before the Precious Guru’s birth, many children in the family died shortly after birth. His current teacher, Thubten Norbu Rinpoche, then sought help from the renowned Dundrup (Dokchu) Rinpoche in Aba County. Rinpoche said, “After performing 100,000 Guru Rinpoche Tsok offerings, a son who benefits sentient beings, propagates the Dharma, and possesses blessings will be born.” He then gave this prophecy.

Yes! Yes!

May the blessings of Guru Rinpoche and Tara (the Holy Mother of the South) guide all beings.

A child named Dorje, born in the Year of the Ox, will be born as a guide for all beings.

If he encounters no obstacles or adverse conditions at the ages of 16, 25, 35, and 37,

he will lead countless fortunate people on the path to liberation and attain the fruit of liberation.

All those with karmic connections, whether facing favorable or unfavorable circumstances, will be led to the Pure Land of Lotus Light.

He will propagate the pure and true teachings in all directions.

After the birth of Master Bao, thirteen great Rinpoches, including Kangtsang Rinpoche and Karma Chame, recognized him as the incarnation of Namkhai Nyingpo—the reincarnation of Kathok Rinchen Chenpo. This is also recorded in the prophecies of Nyelong Rinpoche and his consorts.

Aja Tertön prophesied:

A reincarnation of Nanning

Will go to the low-lying Yellow River basin

Named Pema

With a tiger stripe mark on his thigh

In the degenerate age, if conditions are not confused

He will work on precious terma (hidden treasures)

Leading all those with affinity to the Pure Land

Thus, his birthplace and name, Pema Wangchen, were prophesied, especially in the prophecy of Kangtsang Rinpoche, which mentioned:

From there to the east

The towering Yellow River basin

The meaningful and wise names “Ga” and “Sha”

A child named Dorje, born in the Year of the Ox

is the heart-son Namkhai Nyingpo

“Ga” is the Dharma name of the father of the Precious Master, Garu Tseten (also known as Garsang Osa), and “Sha” is the Dharma name of the mother, Shara Drolma. The Precious Master’s childhood name was Dundu Padma Dorje; here, the name “Dorje” and his birthplace are clearly indicated.

The prophecy of the Second Precious Master (Rinchen Tsewang Norbu):

An extremely mysterious mind treasure

will be retrieved from beside the Southern Rock

People will be guided onto the path of liberation

A being named Pema will come

Able to stop the rampant flow of the degenerate age

I pray for the coming of this reincarnation

Here, a prophecy involving a partial name has been revealed.

The prophecy of Langga Rinpoche, the accomplished master of Kurukulla:

The purity of the Dharmadhatu, without beginning, end, middle, or extreme

The mind realm of Samantabhadra, free from clinging to clarity and emptiness

Reaching the primordial ground of firm abiding

There will be an unparalleled charioteer holding the wondrous vehicle

The mind that transcends the three times, capable of all actions, the ability to act, and all actions

The non-dual realm of clarity and emptiness, free from conceptual elaboration

The face of the primordial Buddha

The Vajra body, the embodiment of all auspiciousness

Honorably placed in the heart.

雪域有名的伏藏大师年龙上师佛父母赐给尊者的 《预言明镜》中记载:

莲花堆山处 胜者莲花名

将有汉地行 牛年初五日

善缘成熟时 将遇此法门

From the place of Dama Cha, the messenger arrives by swift flight

Golden mountains gleam with light, silver ground adorned with Mani jewels

Lightning flashes above, demons will obstruct

To remove this obstacle, the Fiery Blue Dakini

Perform 100,000 offerings, the Guru Rinpoche Prayer

Recite it 100 million times, diligently reciting it in this way

May your wishes be fulfilled, keep it firmly in your heart

Samaya

It is also recorded in the Lamp of Prophecy:

Where the Yellow River flows gently

The heart-son of the sole protector Guru Rinpoche is named Hiliya

Also a hermit yogi

From the snowy land to India and Han China

At one moment, due to karmic conditions, he awakened to his past life’s vows

When he danced the Seven-Posture Vajra Dance

Some slandered, some praised, many were wronged

Through Guru Rinpoche’s blessings, his fame will thunder

Pervading the ten directions

This protector has a close karmic connection with me from many lifetimes

The Nine Supreme Practices and the Half-Circle Practice

Especially the Fiery Blue Dakini collection of teachings

If you can accept it

Long life May all endeavors be perfected

May the Dharma be propagated and all sentient beings benefit

May those who obstruct the degenerate age

May all be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss

May the teachings of parents and the hidden treasure teachings flourish and be perfected

Time and conditions should not be neglected

This is entrusted to your heart child according to the prophecy of the Dakinis

Samaya

Activity Center

In 2000, following the prophecies of his two root gurus, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche and Shakya Rinpoche, Master Bao, mindful of the Dharma and desiring that all his disciples attain enlightenment, and recognizing the heavy afflictions and shallow wisdom of sentient beings in this degenerate age, believed that retreat was the most effective path to liberation from the cycle of birth and death, as the saying goes, “One day of diligent retreat is better than a thousand years of scattered practice.” Through his aspiration and the blessings of his gurus, he completed a 420-ping (approximately 64 square meters) retreat center—Miaocheng Dharma Garden—in just one year at Zhendu Village, Shengang Township, Taichung.

Merits and Achievements

In 2000, under the guidance of two great Kathok masters and their root protectors—Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche and Shakya Rinpoche—he resided in Taiwan.

Because of the inconceivable power of the words of the reincarnated Living Buddha, Master Bao mastered Chinese fluently in nine months. Afterwards, he could read countless Chinese classics, including Laozi, Tao Te Ching, Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, Mencius, The Art of War, Zizhi Tongjian, and three hundred Tang poems.

Besides preaching and expounding the Dharma in Chinese, Master Bao devoted himself to the translation of Dharma texts into Chinese and to writing books.

Chinese Translations: To date, over forty volumes of the Rinchen Qianbao Series have been published in Taiwan, along with over one hundred related Three Roots practice rituals…

Publications: In addition to thirteen books on Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan history, biographies, poetics, and novels, it is particularly worth mentioning that, due to the passage of time, the Dharma collections of the Second Tsewang Norbu were scattered around the world. For many years, Master Bao tirelessly traveled and endured countless hardships to completely compile the complete Dharma collections of the Second Tsewang Norbu and the Dharma collections of the Jonang school master, Dorje Natha.

Biographical Works: The Biographies of the Four Great Masters of Xueqiong, The Poetic Biography of Ongzhu Rinpoche, The Biography of Mula Jue.

Dharma Collections: The Secret Treasury of the Mind of All Buddhas, The Preliminary Guide to the Thousand Treasures of Rigdzin, Explanation of the Eight Verses on Mind Training, Explanation of the Thirty-Seven Verses on the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, Explanation of the Fourteen Root Falls, Guide to the Generation Stage, Guide to the Completion Stage, Explanation of Manjushri Dzogchen, Explanation of the Three Spaces of Dzogchen, Extensive Explanation of the Eight Great Herukas, The Collection of Akasagarbha, The Vajra Bridge of Dzogchen Oral Transmission, etc.

Other Works: Diary of a Tibetan Monk, An Introduction to the Tibetan Language, A Study of Tibetan Funerals, A Study of Tibetan Names, Collection of Songs of Realization, Collection of Treatises on Vajra Dance, Chronicle of Mula Monastery, Collection of Maxims, Annotations on Drama, An Introduction to the Astronomy and Calendar of the Tantras, An Introduction to the Melodious Sounds of Sanskrit, Lectures of the Supreme Wisdom Master.

In addition to his profound Buddhist knowledge, Master Bao is also skilled in writing various Tibetan poems and lyrics. He has been recognized as the best young author and poet by several newspapers and magazines, including the Nepalese “Himalayan Voice Magazine”. He also currently serves as a reviewer for Tibetan anthologies in some newspapers and magazines.

Guru Rinpoche said: Among the treasure revealers, the mind treasure revealer is the most supreme. Some accomplished masters also say that the mind treasure revealer is the wish-fulfilling jewel of hidden treasures, granting all requests. From a young age, the Precious Master continuously retrieved various mind treasures, finding both mind and hidden treasures in various sacred sites. However, the Precious Master rarely revealed these to outsiders, only sharing a few examples:

At age 5, he and Sangpo Rinpoche retrieved a treasure box and vajra from a triangular ravine near the monastery.

At age 12, he wrote the book The Secret Treasury of the Minds of All Buddhas. Sangpo, the reincarnation of Duge Rinpoche, and the yogi Jungen (two direct disciples of the great accomplished master Yutuo) were greatly astonished after reading this work and practiced it with reverence and faith.

At age 13, he retrieved the Medicine Buddha Thousand Offerings text from the mind treasure repository.

In 2018, he led his disciples on a pilgrimage to Nepal and retrieved a stone vajra, a terma (treasure) of Guru Rinpoche, from the Yanglie Snow Mountain Cave, where Guru Rinpoche attained Mahamudra through Vajrakilaya practice.

Master Bao, along with his senior brother Danbi Nyima Rinpoche and disciple Huizhuang Lama, entered the cave first to offer prayers and light. Suddenly, Master Bao raised his hand and reached into a small crevice in the cave ceiling, asking Huizhuang Lama to give him a khata (ceremonial scarf). Master Bao then used the khata to wrap and retrieve a stone vajra (peaceful offering) from which dakini (heavenly beings) naturally appeared.

In 2019, amidst the raging COVID-19 pandemic, at the request of several Rinpoches, he retrieved the Miraculous Medicine Garden, a practice ritual of the Leaf-Clad Mother, from his mind’s secret repository.

The Practice of the Leaf-Clothed Buddha Mother from the Mind Treasure of the Precious Guru, “The Garden of Blissful Joy”

Impermanence is ever-present. In the realm of the Precious Guru, enabling disciples to connect with the sublime Dharma and with numerous accomplished masters is the most direct way to enter the path of liberation. Therefore, since the establishment of the Wonderful Vehicle Dharma Garden, countless eminent masters have been invited by the Precious Guru to teach the Dharma. It can be said that almost all those who could be invited, especially the great masters of the Nyingma school, have taught at Wonderful Vehicle. Wonderful Vehicle is considered a sacred place by the Precious Guru and his fourfold assembly of disciples due to the blessings of numerous accomplished masters.

His Holiness Sakya Dachen transmitted the Dharma at the Wonderful Vehicle Dharma Garden.

His Holiness Sakya Dachen transmitted the Vajrakilaya teachings at Hui Tian Zen Monastery and, together with his consort, blessed the monastery.

And so on…

The Mula Monastery Tibetan Hospital, built with the support of Master Bao.

Over the years, Master Bao has been invited annually to prisons in Taiwan to expound on the cause and effect of good and evil to inmates, providing spiritual guidance and humanitarian care to serious offenders facing execution.

Furthermore, Master Bao has assisted in the construction of the retreat center for the Nepalese Kelsang Vajra Master; supported the construction of a retreat center and hospital at the ancestral Mula Monastery; and supported the construction of retreat centers at the Qinghai Mantra Academy, etc.

Several of Master Bao’s teachers have warned him that if he did not retreat into seclusion to practice and instead entered the world to spread the Dharma, he would shorten his lifespan by several decades. Disregarding this obstacle to his lifespan, for the sake of all sentient beings, he resolutely embarked on the path of propagating the Dharma.

In Master Bao’s view, building temples, establishing orphanages, releasing animals, and making offerings are all good deeds that cultivate merit, and sentient beings need these resources. However, these are only a part of the Dharma, not its essence. He is more concerned with how to liberate sentient beings from the suffering of samsara. Therefore, he often admonished his disciples, “If you wish to attain liberation, you must diligently cultivate in listening, contemplation, and meditation, practicing step by step; only in this way can you obtain ultimate benefit.”

Thus, he taught without discrimination, tailoring his instruction to each individual’s needs. He generously shared his teachings with all who sincerely sought the Dharma, imparting all his realizations and insights.

Every year, he tirelessly traveled the world to propagate the Dharma. His empowerment ceremonies and discourses, covering topics such as epidemic prevention, obstacle removal, increasing blessings, longevity, wealth, and deliverance, opened minds and saved sentient beings from suffering, were held one after another. Even during last year’s pandemic, he completed nearly seventy ceremonies under limited conditions.

Deeply aware of impermanence, amidst his busy schedule of ceremonies and receiving devotees, he still set aside time each year for solitary retreat and meditation. He taught by example, setting a model for his disciples through his actions—this is how a practitioner seeking liberation should act!
