The Inheritance and Teachings of Dzogchen

Garab Dorje (Prahevajra) in Sanskrit and Garab Dorje in Tibetan

It is said that Kala Dorje was born in Uddiyana, India, the birthplace of Guru Rinpoche. His mother was a fully ordained nun, the daughter of the king of Uddiyana, and was said to be not a mortal. While meditating beside a large body of water, she dreamed of a man with a transparent body of crystal who gave her an initiation with five dakini seed syllables on a crystal vase. The nun told her maid about this, and she said it was a sign that an incarnation was about to appear. Soon after, the nun gave birth to a boy who was an incarnation of Vajrasattva, a boy called “Semlhak Chen” by the deities of the heavens.

As the child had no father, the nun felt ashamed and dumped him in an ash pit. Then, wonderful sounds and light came out of the ash pit, and flowers rained down. Three days later, the nun went to check on the child and found that he was unharmed, so she bathed him. At this time, gods and dakinis appeared in the sky and offered him offerings.

When the child was seven years old, he debated and won against five hundred scholars, the pride of King Ubalazar. The king was very pleased with his grandson and named him Kala Dorje.

It is said that Gara Dorje received all the tantra, sutra and oral instructions of Dzogchen directly from Vajrasattva and Vajrapani. Gara Dorje passed these teachings to his great disciple Manjusri Mitra. As is known, Guru Rinpoche also received the Dzogchen teachings directly from Gara Dorje.

At the time of his passing, Kala Dorje gave his final teachings to Mahāsthāna. These three instructions are the Three Essentials of the Dzogchen (Tibetan: Tsig Sum Nedek), which summarize the essence of the Dzogchen teachings:

● Straight to the original face

● Only in this is the decision

● Be sure of liberation

[Translation note: The above is quoted from the translation of Dudjom Pema Namgyal in the book “The Three Essentials of Dzogchen: Kachen Rinpoche’s Dzogchen Enlightenment Method”]

Quote:

In the originally pure Dharma realm, original awareness suddenly arises, and one recognizes it in an instant, just like finding a precious treasure in the deep ocean. It is not created by anyone – it is simply the Dharmakaya.

– Gara Dorje

The nature of the mind is always a Buddha.

It is like a void that has no life and no destruction.

If the true meaning of the equality of all laws is proved,

To settle down and not to seek is to meditate.

– Gara Dorje
