One of the highest practices of Buddhism
The Inheritance and Teachings of Dzogchen

It is said that Mahārāshtra was born in a Brahmin family in the city of Vikramā, west of Bodh Gaya, India. His father was Sadhu Shastri (Lehu) and his mother was Pudibaloka (Gehana). He later became a great pandit who was proficient in the five sciences.
In the pure vision, Manjushri Bodhisattva appeared and gave him a prophecy, saying: “Good man, if you want to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime, go to the Shitavana charnel ground.” Maitreya went there and studied with Garab Dorje for a total of 75 years, and understood the meaning of the Dharma taught by Garab Dorje.
According to Nyushukhan Rinpoche’s account in “The Blue Sapphire of the Dzogchen Lineage”, when Maitreya heard all of Prahevajra’s teachings, Prahevajra merged into the infinite rainbow light emanating from the Dantik River. Maitreya cried out in sorrow, “Alas! Great space! If the light of the guru disappears, who can remove the darkness of the world?” At this time, a golden box the size of a fingernail fell from the rainbow light with a thunderclap and landed in his palm. Maitreya opened the golden box and found the “Three Essentials” of Prahevajra written on the leaves of five kinds of treasures with blue glass solution. Just by seeing this legacy, Maitreya attained the same enlightenment as Prahevajra.
After that, Mahāyājīva divided the 6.4 million stanzas of Dzogchen into three parts: 1) the methods that emphasize the way of “remaining” the mind, which he classified into the heart part; 2) the methods that emphasize immobility, which he classified into the realm part; 3) the methods that emphasize the key points, which he classified into the secret part. He also divided the most excellent Nyingthig methods in the secret part into two groups: 1) the “Oral Transmission Tantra”; 2) the “Lecture Tantra”.
He wrote down the Oral Transmission Sutra, but did not find a qualified disciple to teach the Lecture Sutra, so he hid the Sutra under a round stone with a cross vajra pattern on it at the Vajrasana in Bodh Gaya.
He stayed in the charnel ground in Sosa, west of Bodhgaya, for 109 years, meditating on tantra with countless dakinis. At that time, Shri Singha came from China and became a disciple of Mahavairocana. He passed all the teachings to Shri Singha.
