Today we will practice one of the eight manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava—the Wrathful Guru Padmasambhava, also known as the “Fierce Wisdom of the Wrathful Guru Padmasambhava.” His form differs from the peaceful form we usually see; he manifests as an extremely fierce figure with powerful demon-subduing abilities.
This lineage is exceptionally precious, originating from Guru Padmasambhava, later retrieved by treasure revealers, and propagated by great masters such as Longchen Rabjampa. What we practice today is a shorter version of this ritual, but its power is equally complete and swift.
Why do Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifest in wrathful forms? This is not because they harbor hatred, but out of immense compassion. In this world, there are many sentient beings, both visible and invisible, and even some practitioners who, due to deviations, become “demonic obstacles.” If these beings are difficult to subdue with only a gentle and compassionate form, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will manifest in extremely fierce deity forms, using the wrathful fire of wisdom to destroy the obstacles on the path of practice.
In Tibet, there are many stories of the wrathful Guru Rinpoche subduing evil spirits and protecting the Dharma. For example, Kathok Monastery in Kham (present-day Ganzi Prefecture), after its construction about 800 years ago, experienced a period of disturbance caused by local evil spirits, disrupting the monastery’s peace. Monks left in droves, and the monastery was temporarily deserted. Later, the master Longchen Rabjampa came to Kathok Monastery and diligently practiced the “Wisdom Blazing” Dharma, subduing the local non-human beings and the eight classes of celestial beings, restoring the monastery to its purity. He then rebuilt Kathok Monastery on its original site—the monastery we see today, rebuilt 300 years ago.
In this degenerate age, the world is filled with various calamities: earthquakes, fires, floods, wars, plagues, and various forms of mental disturbance and non-human obstacles. Especially in Southeast Asia, people often encounter possession by evil spirits and bewitched by curses. At this time, practicing the wrathful Guru Rinpoche Dharma becomes particularly important. We have used this Dharma many times in Malaysia, Singapore, and other places to help sentient beings resolve calamities and disturbances.
Some might ask: If a person has great merit and hasn’t committed evil deeds, will they be immune to these disturbances? Indeed, they are. However, if one’s merit is weaker, or if they have committed evil deeds, they are more susceptible to negative external influences. In such cases, on the one hand, one should sincerely repent and practice Vajrasattva more; on the other hand, one should also rely on the special power of the wrathful deities for purification and protection.
However, to receive the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, we ourselves must also possess the corresponding conditions. The compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is omnipresent, like the sunshine, but if we close our doors and windows, the sunshine cannot enter. Similarly, if we lack faith and our motivation is impure, the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will find it difficult to penetrate our mindstream.
Therefore, before practicing, we should contemplate the virtues of the Three Jewels, especially the virtues of Wrathful Guru Rinpoche. If you are unfamiliar with Wrathful Guru Rinpoche, you can think of it this way: Padmasambhava is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, and Wrathful Guru Rinpoche is the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara’s great compassion and wisdom. We should pray and remember more, so that our hearts resonate with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
There are roughly four levels of attainment in practicing this method: Recitation attainment, where one continuously visualizes the form, virtues, and mantra of the deity; Meditation attainment, where visualization becomes proficient, and one feels close to and merges with the deity; Accomplishment, where one’s virtuous wishes are fulfilled, benefiting oneself and others; and Great Accomplishment, where one possesses vast beneficial activities, able to liberate countless beings.
Even with only initial practice, the ability to control emotions and alleviate afflictions already demonstrates the effectiveness of the method.
It is particularly worth mentioning that the Wrathful Guru Rinpoche method has a very significant effect on common modern mental health issues—such as depression, phobias, and bipolar disorder. I have taught this method to many people, and by consistently reciting the mantra 108 times daily, many have seen their fear and depression gradually lessen or even disappear. This is not to say that there is a hierarchy among different methods, but rather because the Wrathful Guru Rinpoche made a special vow and has a deep karmic connection with these kinds of beings, thus achieving a special resonance.
In practice, we can visualize ourselves as the wrathful Guru Rinpoche, or visualize the wrathful Guru Rinpoche radiating light and blessing us, illuminating ourselves and our environment, preventing any obstacles from intruding. At the same time, we should also make this aspiration: May all beings suffering from fear and depression find inner peace and gain fearlessness and strength through the practice of this method.
Now, I will teach you the mantra and visualization method of the wrathful Guru Rinpoche, and then we will practice together. Please receive and practice this with faith and devotion.
